Read-a-Thon Wrap-up

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
The last hour from 11pm to midnight. Especially since I foolishly chose a horror story!

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff was a short, AWESOME read, especially for us book lovers.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
Mini-Challenges that don't take up much time such as more personal question surveys.

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I really liked having people comment on my posts and cheer me on.

5. How many books did you read?
Eight books with 1,736 pages

6. What were the names of the books you read?
Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury, 5 of 10 stars
Sarah, Plain and Tall by Maclachlan, 5 of 10 stars
84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, 10 of 10 stars
Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Vaughn, 7 of 10 stars
The Phantom Tollbooth by Juster, 6 of 10 stars
Hot Six by Evanovich, 7 of 10 stars
And Then There Were None by Christie, 9 of 10 stars
The Mist by King, 6 of 10 stars

7. Which book did you enjoy most?
Hands down, Charing Cross by Hanff. I laughed so much while reading it. I wasn't expecting it to be so funny.

8. Which did you enjoy least?
I should have picked an easier book to start with than Fahrenheit 451. It was a bit of a slog as it was rambling.

10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
Very likely. I'll be a reader and donor again. I'd like to create a mini-challenge but not run it.

Yes, I really, really, read the last chapter first in "whodunits." In this case, I've needed to read it a couple times to be really clear on who did what to who! A very enjoyable book. Now I know why she is a classic.

Hour 13

Some people will kill me for this, but I read the last chapter first in order to find out who did it. That way I can enjoy the book and pick out all the hints along the way.

Mid-Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now?
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

2. How many books have you read so far?
Six

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Either Lucinda, Darkly by Sunny or White Witch, Black Curse by Kim Harrison

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?
None other than letting my hubby know.

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
No real interruptions.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
I thought I'd have more time reading, but blogged, tweeted and such more than I thought I would.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
Mini-challenges that don't take up so much time. I'd rather be reading. I don't mind commenting or posting, but trying to figure out hard trivia questions or doing dioramas or pictures is a bit much.

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?
Get more sleep the night before.

9. Are you getting tired yet?
Oh yeah, been fighting the sleepies since about 2pm.

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
Nothing that hasn't been mentioned before. The most important being to have some short, easy books for when you get tired and to not start off with something deep.

Hot Six is lots of fun. Plum has managed to go through three cars already - her Honda got burnt to death, the "Rollswagon" got smashed and now she's driving her family's old Buick land yacht.

The second half is better than the first half, so I'm enjoying myself now; however, I think I'm going to need a nap. I'm feeling very sleepy. But I don't want to stop! I must read, Read, READ!

Hour 8

Current Book: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Minutes Read Since Last Update: 46 minutes

Kitty is okay, just an average read. Anything would be a let down after the fabulous Charing Cross though. Hubby has gone out to get lunch at Subway. I'm starving! And at some point, I should probably shower!

Mini-Challenges Completed: Readers of the Hour

I ADORE Charing Cross Road. It's correspondence between a cantankerous yet funny woman writer in New York and an antique books dealer in England. Any book lover will enjoy this and I'll be putting it down as my favorite book this year!

Hour 3

Current Book: Sarah, Plain and Tall
Minutes Since Last Update: 51
Pages Read Since Last Update: 118

Total Time Read: 1 hour, 35 minutes
Total Pages: 179
Total Books: 1

Starting on book two. Since this is a YA, it should be an easier read.

Hour 2

Current Book: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Minutes Read: 44 minutes
Pages Read: 61
Challenges: Introduction Meme

I'm not impressed with Fahrenheit. I'll complete it but I don't think it was a good book to start with. It lacks structure and is rather confusing. It's a hard one to concentrate on this early in the morning.

Hour 1

I'm starting with Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, 179 pages.
